Autzen Stadium reflects SOM’s ability to design a project in harmony with a difficult site. Located north of the University of Oregon’s main campus, across the Willamette River, the stadium rests on a bed of river rock bisected by water lines. Unable to excavate deep into the earth, designers placed the building largely above grade, a decision that significantly reduced the time and cost of construction.

The 40,000-seat stadium takes the form of a large earthen bowl, integrated into the surrounding area with locally sourced infill. The sloped sides of the arena incorporate broad access ramps and grass plantings. In addition to facilities for teams, game officials, and groundskeepers, the stadium contains a press box, six concession areas, a vendor’s area, and an emergency station.
