An interconnected workspace

The Trade Desk envisioned a creative office with interconnected floors that would prioritize the well-being of its staff, offer flexibility throughout the day, and support the company’s collaborative workplace culture. SOM’s design meets each of these goals in one stroke, with a three-story atrium at the heart of the new workplace. With a media wall rising from the lobby to the uppermost level of this space, the atrium fosters connections—visually, physically, and virtually.

The reception area creates a “living room” setting, with informal seating and a cafe in one elastic space. Moveable furniture supports the various events hosted by The Trade Desk, from panel discussions and officewide meetings to evening parties. Behind the screen, a feature stair links the floors together, while the lower two floors are connected with a modest open stair.

Prioritizing wellness

Complementing the versatility of the atrium, The Trade Desk is filled with amenities designed to cultivate a healthy workplace. Plantings line the windows on every floor, and two light-filled cafes provide large communal spaces for dining, work, and recharging. Breakout spaces and game rooms serve as common areas and help build community, wellness rooms offer spaces for respite, and shower rooms promote active commutes to work.

Celebrating the city

The design blends The Trade Desk’s casual California roots with New York City’s urban intensity. The Grace Building offers commanding views of the city over Bryant Park, and the interiors are designed to privilege this urban panorama. The tone of the materials—from the exposed white ceilings to the dark gray surfaces in the amenity spaces—harmonizes with the aesthetics of Midtown Manhattan. The result is a workplace that directs attention to the skyline and that is brightened by natural light throughout the day.
