As its population increases, Ho Chi Minh City has seen high-density development in its urban core threaten the preservation of historic neighborhoods. This master plan steers development south of the city, where substantial new growth can be accommodated cost-effectively with close proximity to public transit and existing centers of business.
The 2,630-hectare Saigon South plan creates a modern, international community with a series of compact, walkable neighborhoods and an extensive network of scenic waterways. Incremental expansion of the development allows each district to have its own unique identity. In addition to recreational and commercial buildings, the master plan provides much-needed educational, cultural, and recreational facilities.
SOM’s scheme presents the overall vision and development framework to allow Saigon South to function as a self-contained community. It also offers flexible planning principles to address a range of potential development scenarios in this flourishing Vietnamese city.
