As the Chinese city of Nanchang continues to grow as an important center of commerce and culture, the Nanchang Greenland Exhibition Center builds on this momentum. It provides the capital of Jiangxi Province with a world-class facility for events, fairs, and exhibitions that will further strengthen the region’s economy and expand cultural offerings. The expansive, spiral structure reveals a design informed by patterns found in nature, such as seashells and plants. It houses 128,000 square meters of exhibition space, giving event and exhibition organizers the flexibility to transform the space to meet their unique needs.

Two stories of exhibition areas—including 65,000 square meters of column-free space—are easily reconfigured to accommodate a wide range of uses. Eighty-one meters wide, the hall can be used as a continuous space or divided into smaller galleries; strategically zoned low-energy LED lighting facilitates concurrent events and allows operators to limit energy use.

The exhibition spaces open out onto a full-height atrium, clad on its western facade with an immense 650-meter glass cable wall designed to fill the long, arcing lobby with daylight. The facade offers views out onto a landscaped plaza and 30,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition space. The atrium is brightened with a gradient of colorful rectangular tiles, and features intuitive wayfinding developed as a part of the Center’s comprehensive environmental graphics program.

Gently curving around a landscaped plaza, the building’s design follows the Fibonacci sequence. Its arcing roof is ribbed with a series of 18 wave-shaped grooves designed to filter daylight deep into the center and provide natural ventilation and rainwater collection. A 40-meter cantilevered overhang protects visitors from the elements on the lobby side of the center. On the outer, eastern exterior, a cantilever shields utility roads and back-of-house functions.

Adjacent to the Nanchang West Railway Station—reachable from Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Wuhan in less than four hours on high-speed rail—and next to a future Nanchang Metro station, the center is well-positioned to become a major economic driver for Jiangxi. Fusing programmatic flexibility, visually striking design, and unprecedented connectivity, the Greenland Exhibition Center plays a key role in solidifying Nanchang’s status as a regional economic and cultural hub.
