SOM’s relationship with Central Trust Bank began in the 1960s with the design of a branch in Jefferson City, Missouri, that led to subsequent commissions. More recently, the bank hired SOM to create three branch prototypes, including a model for small neighborhood facilities, to be built throughout the Midwest.
The architecture takes its cues from the surrounding prairie, incorporating a planar roof that mirrors the linear horizon line. To control light and mitigate heat, the design team incorporated high-performance glazing and a large, white overhanging roof that shades the entire structure. The building is sleek and modern, but also open and inviting — a reflection of the company’s commitment to its Midwestern customers.
