An upgrade to advance the organization’s mission

Having outgrown the downtown Chicago headquarters it has occupied for more than 20 years, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) engaged SOM to lead a new vision for its offices. The new workplace is designed to accommodate ongoing growth in membership and to reflect the organization’s commitment to the highest standards of surgical care, advocacy, and ethical practice.

The renovation creates a modern, flexible workspace that promotes health and well-being. ACS now has a multifunctional and modern space where staff, practicing surgeons, and fellows can serve the organization’s mission.

Reinforcing a culture of connection

The new office is defined by open, collaborative spaces which accommodate many different styles and preferences for working. Formerly private corner offices have been transformed into open collaboration areas, with city views and abundant daylight. Perimeter offices are enclosed with transparent glass. Together with communal workspaces, the renovation project increases the number of conference rooms available on each floor.

Many of the upgrades are designed to promote a healthy lifestyle; sit-stand desks at every workstation, a larger café with a variety of seating, and a new fitness center support an overall focus on well-being. Employees use the café space not only for meals, but for meetings and as an alternative work area.

Modernizing the office space

Underutilized storage space was repurposed, paint and carpeting throughout were updated, and the cafe was converted into a multi-functional space. The Board of Regents Room, a grand domed event space, was transformed into three meeting spaces with flexible furniture, lighting, and audiovisual technology, improving the overall utilization and access for staff. Finishes have been updated with lighter, sophisticated, natural materials, bringing a much-needed brightness to the space.
