In lectures across three days in Switzerland and Germany, SOM Structural Engineering Partner William F. Baker will present papers on engineering and tall buildings. Baker will speak at leading institutions of architecture and technology as well as at the conference Vision and Construction symposium.
On Wednesday, October 10th, Baker will present “Structuring Tall Buildings” at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich’s Institute of Technology in Architecture. On Thursday, October 11th, Baker will travel to Germany’s Technische Universität in Berlin-Wedding to present a lecture titled “Theories of Maxwell, Rankine, Airy, and Michell and the Design of Modern Structures.” On Friday, October 12th, Baker will participate in the Vision and Construction: Structural Engineering Symposium hosted by Germany’s Association of Consulting Engineers at the Karl-Hofer Society. Baker will present a paper titled “Design Integration and Tall Buildings.”
Baker will share insight on the creative work of engineers, their ideas in structural design and the conception of buildings, recent research on the design integration of tall buildings, and historical and modern uses of graphical techniques in modern structural design theory. Baker will discuss the work of, among others, scientist James Clerk Maxwell and engineer William John Macquorn Rankine.
Baker’s research contributions to the field of structural engineering include the buttressed core structural system, supertall buildings, and long-span roof structures. He is actively involved with numerous professional organizations and institutions of higher learning. He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Cambridge and has received honorary doctorates from the University of Missouri, the University of Stuttgart, Heriot-Watt University, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Additionally, he is a faculty member of the Northwestern McCormick School of Engineering.
