On Tuesday, December 5th, the SOM Women’s Initiative hosted a speed mentoring event in our Chicago office. Thirty-four mentors from various disciplines offered candid career advice to 32 mentees, all members of SOM’s Chicago staff. Conversations centered on work-life balance, leadership, growth, and other related topics.
In advance of the event, mentees received information on the careers, interests, and areas of expertise of each mentor, along with sample questions for mentors. Mentees rotated every ten minutes, meeting with various senior-level colleagues along the way. Following the event, a reception allowed for the discussions to continue in a more informal setting.
This was the first speed mentoring event to take place at SOM. It was organized to provide members of SOM’s staff with the opportunity to connect with associates and partners.

The SOM Women’s Initiative was established in 2011 to cultivate and promote the continued development and success of women at SOM and within the design disciplines. SOMWI aims to encourage a sense of community and professional support within the firm through various mentoring programs, workshops, and internal networks.
