SOM Participates in International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures Symposium

At the 2018 symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS), representatives from SOM will present on a variety of topics. The event brings together leading designers and researchers working in the fields of structural engineering and architecture. The 2018 symposium, for which SOM is one of the sponsors, will take place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from July 16-20. The theme of this year’s event is “Creativity in Structural Design.”

William F. Baker, SOM Structural Engineering Partner, will present opening and closing remarks and participate in several sessions. SOM’s in-house research groups, known as the Structural Research Gang and Blackbox, will present on various topics, including force density, principal stress, 3D printing, and graphic statics.

Additionally, a paper authored by SOM’s Baker, Christian Hartz, Arek Mazurek, Masaaki Miki, Toby Mitchell, and Tomas Zegard, formerly of SOM, will be honored at the symposium. Titled “The Application of 2D and 3D Graphic Statics in Design,” the paper has been selected as the winner of the IASS Tsuboi Award, in the category of Most Outstanding Paper, in the Proceedings of the 2017 symposium. It will be be published in the Journal of the IASS.

Founded in 1959, the IASS is an organization that promotes the creative integration of structural engineering and architecture, with a specific focus on lightweight structural systems such as lattice tension, membrane, and shell structures. Through its annual symposium, IASS celebrates innovative work in the built environment that reflects interdisciplinary collaboration and problem-solving. Below is a list of sessions featuring representatives from SOM. For specific details and additional information on the symposium, see the full schedule.
