On October 17th through October 20th, 2018, SOM will participate in NOMA Unbounded, the annual conference of the National Organization of Minority Architects. Described as a “conference without walls,” this year’s symposium takes place at various venues in Chicago including the Palmer House, the Chicago Architecture Center, and the International Interior Design Association. The event brings together architects, urban designers, community activists, and design students to discuss issues of inclusivity in architecture, mentoring and leadership by underrepresented groups, and design achievements in the past year.
Staff from across several SOM offices will present at the conference. On Thursday, Ingedia Sanchez will give a workshop titled “Perspectives of Enclosure Development.” On Friday, Lisa Pascual will lead virtual reality demos at the NOMA Expo & College Grad Fair. On Saturday, Tiara Hughes will present “Beyond Vortex: Engaging, Mentoring, and Supporting Black Women on their Path,” while Ellen Abraham will present “Power to the People: Translating Resilience through Culture.” Finally, Brian Lee and Dawveed Scully will judge student designs for mixed-use transit oriented development for the South Side Chicago neighborhood of Woodlawn, where SOM has worked with local residents to create a community plan.
