SOM Shapes UK’s Net Zero Carbon Building Standard

A pilot version of the UK’s first cross-industry standard for net zero carbon-aligned buildings launched today. The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is a free-to-access technical standard that will enable the construction industry to robustly prove that built assets align with the UK’s carbon and energy budgets.

Developed for anyone who wants to fund, procure, design, or specify a net zero carbon building, and for anyone who wishes to definitively demonstrate that their building is net zero carbon aligned, the standard forms the UK’s first agreed methodology to achieving a net-zero carbon building.

In addition to sponsoring the standard, SOM’s team helped shape its development. Sustainability Director Mina Hasman and Senior Associate Principal Julia Skeete led the standard’s stakeholder engagement process, which involved capturing feedback through nationwide roundtables and public consultation.
