Mark Sarkisian to Speak at University of Hong Kong’s Shanghai Study Centre

On Thursday, November 1st, SOM Structural and Seismic Engineering Partner Mark Sarkisian will speak at the University of Hong Kong’s Shanghai Study Centre. The title of his presentation, which is part of the school’s 2018 Fall Public Lecture Series, is “A Dialogue of Structure, Architecture, and City.”

In his presentation, Sarkisian will discuss how policy and adopting new ideas for design and construction are important to mitigate issues related to population growth, industrialization, the depletion of natural resources, and climate change. He will touch on the need to approach architecture and design from a holistic perspective that is based on simplicity, structural clarity, and sustainability.

Throughout his career, Sarkisian has focused on developing innovative structural engineering solutions for projects. He has designed more than 100 major building projects around the world, including Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, NBC Tower in Chicago, Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait, and the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California. He is also author of the book “Designing Tall Buildings: Structure as Architecture.”
