SOM Associate Director Kevin Conway served as a member of the jury for the tenth annual RUMBLE exhibition at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design. The event, which ran from June 11-18, 2018, showcased student work from the school’s undergraduate, graduate, and post-professional programs. More than 250 design studio projects and program installations were on view. The exhibition took place both on the school’s main campus and on the IDEAS campus in Culver City, California. IDEAS, part of A.UD, is a multidisciplinary research and development platform that supports collaborations among students, faculty, and practitioners.
Conway served on a jury that reviewed the studio led by Güvenç Özel, Technology Director at IDEAS and principal of the Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary design practice Ozel Office. The focus of the studio was to create “the new museum of the 21st century,” where the building becomes an interface that negotiates between digital and physical worlds. Students worked in teams and presented six projects to the jury. Their projects explored ways to use various forms of technology and media, such as robotics, machine learning, virtual reality, and augmented reality, to inform the architecture and experience of the museum program.
