The New York Council of the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) has awarded John Jay College of Criminal Justice the NY Excellence in Urban Learning Environment Design Award in this year’s Design Awards program.
John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a liberal arts-based college dedicated to education, research and service in the fields of criminal justice, fire science and public safety. The building, which opened in 2011, provides all the functions of a traditional college campus within the confines of a single city block and doubles the size of John Jay’s existing facilities by adding classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, faculty offices, and student lounges.
The NY Excellence in Urban Learning Environment Design Award recognizes projects that bring bold ideas and fresh vitality to New York City. Following a series of tours through new buildings throughout the city this spring, SARA members selected John Jay as an award recipient, noting its striking design concept and strong sense of place. The project will be recognized at an awards banquet on June 24.
