We’re proud to announce Genesis Marina was awarded the world’s first TRUE Gold certification.

The certification—short for Total Resource Use and Efficiency—is a program administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) family. It is the premier global standard for zero waste and recognizes projects that achieve outstanding levels of resource efficiency through waste reduction, reuse, and recycling practices. Unlike other certifications, TRUE focuses exclusively on waste and circular economy principles, setting the most rigorous standard for waste diversion from landfills.

SOM diverted 98.4 percent of its waste from landfills and incineration for this project, which is unique in that it is built on a former landfill. These efforts help significantly reduce carbon emissions, support public health, offer local jobs, and promote alternatives to the traditional approach of disposing of the materials—aligning with the stringent California policies driving the state to a circular economy future. The project was a collaboration among SOM, Webcor, life science developer Phase 3 Real Estate Partners, Inc. (P3RE), Bain Capital, and All About Waste.
