50-Year-Old Time Capsule at Former John Hancock Building Opened

On Monday, March 12th, WGN News recorded the opening of a 1968 time capsule housed at 875 N. Michigan Avenue (formerly the John Hancock Center) in Chicago. The capsule, known as the Skystone Time Capsule, stored 20 items including a baseball autographed by the Chicago Cubs, a Chicago Blackhawks puck, and a letter from then-Mayor Richard J. Daley to the president of John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, the owner-developer of the skyscraper.

SOM Design Director Eric Keune spoke at the event and commented on the timelessness of the building’s design.

“We always aspire to come up with designs that are so lucid and clear that a child could draw them,” Keune said. “Any child can draw this building and it is immediately identifiable as this building and no other.”
