Karlatornet – Scandinavia’s tallest building – tops out

SOM’s striking new mixed-use building in Sweden’s Gothenburg has topped out. The project — Scandinavia’s tallest building – is designed as a defining landmark of a new mixed-use masterplan for the city’s Lindholmen district.

Upon its completion, the 73-story tower will provide 600 new homes through a mix of apartment types designed for the city’s residents. Amenities – including a gym and residents’ lounge — will help to create a vibrant community within the building. The building will also provide locals and visitors with a hotel, restaurant and observation deck with spectacular views of the city and beyond.

Conceived as an elegant and striking form, Karlatornet marks a shift from Gothenburg’s traditional, low-density patterns of development to provide a new model of sustainable high-rise living. The tower responds to the context of the city’s archipelago and the historic Hamnkanalen through its external palette of matte, earthy-colored materials and its unusual twisting form, offering views over the waterfront or the city from the inside.

The project is due to complete in 2024.
