To celebrate 20 years since the completion of its $100 million renovation by SOM, the Chicago Civic Opera House will host a tour and presentation on Saturday, April 16th, led by SOM Design Director Eric Keune and organized by the Chicago Art Deco Society (CADS). At the event, Keune will shed light on SOM’s collaboration with the Lyric Opera Company and illustrate the design process with never-before-seen drawings from the firm’s archives.
Originally completed in 1929, the Civic Opera House remained unchanged until 1993 when SOM embarked on a renovation to modernize and expand the aging building. SOM preserved and restored the building’s ornate Art Deco features, including its 3,500-seat auditorium, and provided the Lyric Opera Company with a state-of-the-art theater and back-of-house spaces. it also performed a structural and systems update to the building, including the addition of sophisticated acoustic and ventilation systems.
