Craig Hartman to Speak About New Courthouse in Los Angeles

Craig Hartman, SOM Design Partner, will speak on November 13, 2013, about the new federal courthouse in Los Angeles designed by SOM and now under construction. The event will be held at the headquarters for the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Hartman has helped establish SOM’s West Coast architecture group as one of the region’s premier design-driven practices. Drawing from a modern vocabulary, Hartman’s work focuses on issues of place, involving climate, landscape and topography, urban fabric, and historic precedent. The New United States Courthouse will be located on a prominent block in downtown Los Angeles. The design has a strong civic presence rooted in classic principles and sustainable strategies. Targeted to achieve LEED® Platinum, the courthouse uniquely responds to its location. The building’s innovative structural concept suspends the cubic volume above its stone base resulting in an artful and effective response to earthquakes and the threat of blast.
