University of Connecticut – Innovation Partnership Building
Storrs, Connecticut, United States
Technological advancements are spurring new ways of learning in medical schools. The UCSD Telemedicine Building responds to these changes while also meeting an anticipated growth in enrollment.
Situated at the intersection of two major pedestrian routes, the facility serves as a welcoming doorway to the university’s School of Medicine. A dramatic glass sunscreen hangs from the three-story building’s cantilevered concrete roof, while an inner courtyard and adjacent exterior spaces encourage students and faculty to interact and exchange ideas while enjoying the outdoors.
Inside, one finds a simulation hospital with operating rooms, emergency rooms, intensive-care units, and exam rooms, each fitted with cameras and two-way glass. On the second and third floors, classrooms are organized around community learning rooms, an IT suite, and a student lounge. The comprehensive facility also includes a gross-anatomy lab and a 359-seat auditorium.
