The Hong Kong International Airport is a vital transportation hub, serving as a main gateway to both Hong Kong and China. With this in mind, the airport authority set out to explore the potential for commercial development for an expansive stretch of land around the airport. SOM devised a master plan for a new “Airport City” that strives to create a close, symbiotic relationship between the two uses, resulting in a lively 24-hour district. The plan calls for up to 930,000 square meters of commercial development on a 60-hectare parcel. The district would include an exhibition center, an office park, hotels, showrooms, and retail space.
