From October 16th through October 20th, 2019, SOM will participate in the 47th annual National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Conference and Exposition in Brooklyn, New York. This year’s theme is “Believe the Hype: A Global Collective of Industry Change Agents.” The conference will be held at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge and includes a rich program of discussions and events. The annual event brings together architects, urban designers, community activists, and design students to discuss issues of inclusivity in architecture, mentoring and leadership by underrepresented groups, and design achievements in the past year.
Staff from several SOM offices will present at the conference. On Thursday, October 17th, Ellen Abraham will lead the course “Power to the People: Translating Resilience Through Culture v.2” and Dawveed Scully will present “The Value of Design Justice: Infusing Socially Responsible Work Into Your Practice.” On Friday, October 18th, Paul Bamson will present “You’re Doing It Wrong | Optimizing and Integrating Design Software Workflows;” Ingedia Sanchez will lead a workshop titled “Building Enclosure + Super-Tall Facade Maintenance;” and Austin Harris will participate in the panel “What’s in a License?”
On Saturday, October 19th, Danei Cesario will speak on the panel “Global Grassroots: International Efforts for the NEXT GENeration of ARCHitecture.” As a co-chair of the AIANY Diversity & Inclusion Committee, Cesario also helped organize the annual J. Max Bond Jr. Lecture, to be held on Wednesday, October 16th at Alvin Johnson/J.M. Kaplan Hall at The New School.
Throughout the duration of the conference, Tiara Hughes will exhibit “The First 500 Project,” a research initiative designed to raise awareness of the achievements of African American women architects, who currently represent 0.3% of all licensed architects, and to increase their representation in the field. “The First 500 Project” is part of the larger exhibition titled “Design Equality is_____,” co-curated by Ellen Abraham.
Additionally, SOM is a proud sponsor of the Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition. As part of the competition, Partner Colin Koop and Director Yasemin Kologlu will judge student designs for a mixed-use program for the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn.
