Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown has won a 2024 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Healthcare Design Award. This national award celebrates the best in healthcare building design, honoring projects that “help solve aesthetic, civic, urban, and social problems while also being functional and sustainable.”
Winship at Emory Midtown, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Care Center in Georgia, set out to fundamentally change the way cancer care is delivered—a goal that began with reimagining how architecture can serve healthcare.
Transcending traditional hospital design, we worked with May Architecture and Emory University to pioneer a foundational premise: designing a care center not around standard equipment and departmental adjacencies, but instead around optimized patient and provider journeys. Key to this model of care is the creation of “care communities,” each tailored to specific cancer types, that streamline treatment and bring more care to the patient instead of the patient to the care.
Today, the 17-story facility brings more than 455,000 square feet of integrated inpatient, outpatient, and research facilities to the Emory University Hospital Midtown campus and Winship Cancer Institute.
