On June 5th, 2019, the SOM design team joined San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Related California, and city officials for a topping out ceremony at 49 South Van Ness, located in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood. The new 465,000-square-foot civic building, which provides office space for up to 1,800 city employees, will be home to San Francisco’s Public Works, Planning, and Building Inspection departments, among others. It will also serve as a one-stop permit center, consolidating all of the city’s permitting agencies into one space.
“This new building will help us better serve the countless residents and merchants who apply for permits each day by providing a central and convenient location where they can find resources and receive the services they need,” said Mayor London Breed in a statement.
The 16-story building is part of a larger mixed-use development commissioned by Related California. The 2.5-acre site, formerly a Goodwill retail store and operations center, is bounded by Mission Street, South Van Ness Avenue, and 11th Street. The development also includes a 39-story, 550-unit apartment tower and 50,000 square feet of retail. The entire project will be linked via a series of shared open spaces.
Completion and occupancy of 49 South Van Ness are anticipated for the first half of 2020.
