UC Merced 2020 Campus Development Honored with APA Planning Award

The California Chapter, Central Section of the American Planning Association (APA) has honored the UC Merced – 2020 Campus Development Plan with a 2018 Excellence and Achievement in Planning Award. The SOM-designed plan won in the Urban Design category in the annual program.

The 2020 Project, an expansion of the existing campus, is designed to support 10,000 students by the year 2020. It comprises the comprehensive development—from the master plan and design to construction and financing—of mixed-use buildings, infrastructure, landscape, and recreational amenities. The project is the result of a public-private partnership through Plenary Properties Merced, with SOM as the campus planner and master plan architect. Webcor, WRNS, Page, Hahlum, and other firms made up the project team. The master plan creates a compact, walkable campus that is rich with public space and provides an inspiring atmosphere for students and staff.

The Central Section of the APA California Chapter represents 11 counties in the greater central region of the state, including Merced County. Through various initiatives and programs, the organization promotes advocacy, networking, outreach, and professional development in planning in the region.
