The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) has elevated SOM Principal Dmitri Jajich to its prestigious FIStructE (Fellow) grade. This mark of senior status recognizes those who make outstanding contributions to structural engineering, demonstrate exceptional commitment, and energize the industry through inspiring leadership.
Throughout his twenty-three-year career, Dmitri has demonstrated a rare diversity of engineering expertise—from tall building design and long-span structures to single-family homes. His approach showcases the highest level of technical expertise, creativity, and practical construction-focused design.
This approach is evident through’s Dmitri’s contributions to many internationally-significant and award-winning projects, including Manhattan Loft Gardens in London, Denver Union Station in Colorado, and Gothenburg’s Karlatornet. Due to complete construction in 2024 to become the tallest building in Scandinavia, the 246-meter-tall tower features a unique structural engineering system that addresses wind climate and motion issues without dampers.
Dmitri has also developed structural engineering solutions for several projects conceived by the acclaimed artist James Turrell. “Twilight Epiphany” is a permanent outdoor installation at Rice University in Houston. The innovative use of tapered and skewed structural steel cantilevers allowed the design to push the outer limits of cantilever span and slenderness while concealing the structure to give the impression of a roof magically floating in the air.
The Institution of Structural Engineers was founded in 1908 as the Concrete Institute. In 1922, the organization was given its present name, and today it strives towards a structural engineering profession built on competence, accessibility, and community.
