Fazlur Khan Featured in Special University of Illinois Musical Celebration

In 2018, the University of Illinois is celebrating its 150th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the University of Illinois Wind Symphony and Chamber Singers were joined by selected soloists for the debut of Gathering. The composition combines music with a blend of speeches and writings by three prolific University of Illinois alumni, including late SOM partner and structural engineer Fazlur Khan (Ph.D., 1955).

In addition to celebrating the university’s sesquicentennial, the composition celebrates the importance of public education in the United States. “[The performance] expresses the important impact these scholars and many others at our university have made on public education and society,” said the University of Illniois.”Khan, one of the greatest structural engineers of the twentieth century, represents Illinois’ place as a leader among all engineering fields.”

Gathering debuted at the Chicago Symphony Center on Sunday, February 11th. The performance will be repeated in New York and on the University of Illinois campus in Urbana-Champaign this April.
