Madison Square Garden officials have often complained that, much as people want them to move so that Penn Station might be revived, there is nowhere for the arena to go. As of Thursday, The Municipal Art Society is determined to help find such a spot. To do so MAS has tapped four of the world’s premier architects to help address the problem of just where the Garden might go and how to improve Penn Station after it does.
“We have invited some of the best design firms in the world to help us re-think Penn Station and Madison Square Garden creating a world class train station and a world class arena,” MAS president Vin Cipolla said in a press release. The firms are Santiago Calatrava, SOM, SHoP Architects and Diller, Scofidio + Renfro. They will each spend the next two months working on the assignment.
