As founder of SOM’s Urban Design and Planning studio, John Kriken has established a legacy of defining the built environment as one in which human and environmental needs harmoniously coexist.
John Kriken is an internationally known city planner and urban designer and the founder of SOM’s San Francisco-based Urban Design & Planning Studio. He served as a general partner from 1994-2004. His professional experience has ranged from plans for new cities to downtowns and neighborhoods, as well as to campus plans for leading corporations and universities.
Mr. Kriken’s work has won more than 20 national design awards from Progressive Architecture, the American Institute of Architects, and the American Society of Landscape Architects, among others. He has taught urban design at the University of California, Berkeley; Rice University; and Washington University, and has served on numerous arts and community boards; design review panels; and design award juries. He is the founding member of the 27-year-old Sunday Afternoon Watercolor Society.
Currently he is completing a book, “City Building for the 21st Century”; is an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley, College of Environmental Design; chairs the Design Review Board of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission; is an Art Commissioner for the City of San Francisco; and is a member of the Design Advisory Board at UC San Francisco.
