Jeffrey J. McCarthy is a managing partner in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and serves on the Executive Committee that governs the firm. He joined SOM in 1977 and was named a partner in 1990.
Mr. McCarthy has extensive experience providing design services for large, complex, mixed-use developments in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In 1987 he moved to England to assist in opening SOM’s London office. He remained in London through 1989 to manage the master planning of Canary Wharf, a new financial community in the London Docklands.
He currently manages a range of international projects including the new International Treaty Organization Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium; 201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower in London; and Chemsunny Plaza in Beijing, China. Mr. McCarthy’s current projects in the U.S. include the renovation of the Everett M. Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago and the recently completed, LEED®-Certified 601 Congress Street in Boston, Massachusetts.
Mr. McCarthy has a variety of civic and educational commitments. He serves on the President’s Council of the Museum of Science and Industry and is a visiting lecturer to the Graduate Practice and Technology Department of the Architectural School of the University of Illinois.
