Jin Mao Tower
Shanghai, China
At the time of its completion, the 88-story, 1381-foot-high SOM-designed Jin Mao Tower was China’s tallest building and remains its most iconic. Recalling historic Chinese pagoda forms, Jin Mao has become a model for tower designs throughout China. The tower’s program, with office space in the lower 50 stories and a Grand Hyatt Hotel in the top 38, have similarly set a standard for mixed-use tower programming. Advanced structural engineering techniques were employed in the tower design and siting to safeguard it from potential typhoons and earthquakes.
