General Motors Renaissance Center - Overall
Detroit, Michigan
Between 1996 and 2006, SOM spearheaded the design of the 5.5 million square foot renovation of the new GM Renaissance Center. Acting as master architect/engineer, SOM drew on its deep architecture, design, and planning experience to successfully complete one of North America’s most intricate, comprehensive, and massive renovations.
Beyond the redesigned complex, which consolidated facilities for GM’s major divisions, the design also included hotel and retail components—as well as the River East Master Plan for a new, mixed-use neighborhood that reconnects the renovated Center with downtown Detroit.
