Dulles International Airport - Main Terminal Expansion

Chantilly, Virginia

The Main Terminal Expansion for the Washington Dulles Airport incorporates SOM’s architecture, interiors, and project management expertise for the 620-foot-long addition. The existing terminal will be renovated and the en-planement and de-planement ramps will be demolished and reconstructed.

The landside terminal (925,000 sf) includes two above-grade levels for arrivals and departures and two below-grade levels for baggage handling, security, and the people mover station.

A three-level roadway and an automated baggage system were also designed. Work included an analysis of functional requirements, programming, modeling of passenger flows, design criteria, alternative studies, a concept plan, design development, and construction services.

All work is being phased through a seven package construction program to allow the airport to remain functional during construction.
