The decision to develop Canary Wharf at a dense urban scale enabled the creation of a walkable, transit-based district that has gradually challenged The City as London’s financial heart. Canary Wharf’s large scale has enabled financial institutions, particularly those requiring the large-plate trading floors hard to find in the city center, to maintain their headquarters in London. This, in turn, has ensured London’s continued financial centrality to the EU and beyond.
